Found in a Field

Matthew 13:44–46

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

In the mundane, everyday moments of life, treasure awaits—something to be sought out and fought for. The beauty of our ordinary lives is that we get to find God in the little ordinary moments. His glory is always being revealed if we simply seek to see it. Once we have found Him—our Treasure, our Pearl of Great Price—we have found everything we will ever need.

I love this about Jesus because it invites us into an adventure: the adventure of knowing Him and discovering what He is like. From one perspective, these verses reveal that Jesus is the man who found a treasure—us—and sold all He had, and laid down His life for ours on the cross. In light of this, our response as believers is to say “yes”, laying down our lives to follow Him. Whatever it looks like, whatever the cost- because we have seen the worthiness of Jesus. To give up everything we know in exchange for the adventure of a lifetime: discovering His beauty, His nature, and becoming more like Him.

I don’t know about you, but this excites me! I love a good adventure, and deep within my heart is the desire for an irreplaceable role in an unforgettable story. To be a part of something bigger than myself. Yet I often get caught up in my earthly reality and become unaware of God’s desire to do life with me. That He is indeed taking me somewhere, giving me little winks along the way. Showing me what steps to take and inviting me to jump into the river of grace.

Whether I am doing dishes, making coffee + talking to customers, preparing to host a party, skating, or going to the gym, He wants to go with me and speak to me in those places. Those are my treasures—my little moments of joy in the everyday. He loves to surprise us and romance our hearts, reminding us that He is near and that He cares.

One day, you look up and realize, with gratitude, that you simply kept saying ‘yes’ to Him. In something as ordinary as our own “field,” we find more of Him, and He sustains us along the way. Sometimes there are those big moments—job promotions, celebrations, worship nights, prophetic words, new opportunities, and friendships formed. All of these are meant for our good and His ultimate glory. Gifts along the way to encourage us to keep running the race.

I love that this treasure was found in a field, because it communicates to us that it really is quite simple. God is not purposefully hiding or withholding from us, but he does want us to want him.

He knows what excites our hearts. His greatest desire is to bring those things to fruition, but He also knows that we must be prepared to steward them well. It is His kindness that he disciplines us while also giving us gifts to remind us that his goodness and mercy follow all the days of our lives (Psalm 23). He knows how hard it is to wait, to trust, and to have faith. That is why He rewards those who diligently seek Him. He is a rewarder, meeting us both in the everyday moments and in the extraordinary ones. He is so worthy to be sought after and enjoyed by us.

If the Kingdom of Heaven is like this, what would it look like for heaven to intersect earth through people who walk in this reality? What would it look like to be people who have sold all we have, counting everything as loss, motivated by nothing other than love to obey Jesus and serve those around us?

Knowing that the cost was a joy to Him on the cross, it becomes a joy to us as we live in response to His love. We lay down our lives because we find resurrection life in Him!

This is the grandest adventure.

How can I love Him best and love other people from this place?

He provokes us to action, creativity, and wonder.

With love, hav
